The problem seems to be caused by a faulty thumb/preview image file of the scanner.
1.)
Go to:
c:documents and settingsusernameapplication dataEPSONESCNDVES0029
2.)
Backup all files in there (just in case you need to use the files or restore them), delete all files in the folder
3.)
You will now be able to start a new scan.
